Kurosaki Ichigo

Picture
Age: 15
Height: 174 cm
D.o.B: July 7

CHARACTER HISTORY:
As the central character of the series, Ichigo's background and character has recieved the most detail and explanation. He was born on July 7 to Isshin and Masaki Kurosaki, and has twin sisters, four years younger than him, named Yuzu and Karin. By the age of three, he had already begun training in the martial arts, leading him to meet Tatsuki Arisawa for the first time. When he was nine years old, his mother was killed by a Hollow named Grand Fisher, who had drawn Ichigo in using devious tactics; he was capable of seeing spirits as clearly as normal people even at such a young age. The result of his mother's loss took a great toll on him, bringing him as far as to blame himself for the event.

By age 15, he had developed a reputation within his school as trouble; his natural hair color became a source of resentment as an oddity in a place that much perferred conformity, and associated him to gang members and other such people. As a result, he works hard to keep his grades, if for nothing more than to spite those teachers who look upon him with negative views. His tough guy attitude, combined with martial arts training and naturally gifted physique, gives him the power to fight to defend himself and those he deems important to him. The high spiritual powers he possesses also leads him to protect the memory of those spirits who linger on, defending their memorial sites from those who didn't show their respect.

Upon meeting Rukia Kuchiki, his mind was exposed to a world he didn't know; that of the Shinigami. becoming a Shinigami through the transfer of Rukia's powers into him, he learned the basics of Soul Society and the powers he possessed, but was struck down by Byakuya Kuchiki, who removed the powers Ichigo had gained with surgical strikes to his body. Under harsh, life threatening circumstances, he regained these powers under the tutelage of Kisuke Urahara, a former Shinigami Captain.

Soul Society played a key role in his development, forcing him into deadly confrontations with opponent's of increasing power. Where he had entered Soul Society as below the level of a Lieutenant, he left there as a Shinigami of high renown, having defeated four Lieutenants, as well as Captains Kenpachi Zaraki and Byakuya Kuchiki, in his short time there. As proof of his skill, he was awarded with a Medallion by Shinigami Captain, Jushiro Ukitake, signifying Kurosaki as a Substitute Shinigami, recognized by Soul Society as an ally and companion.

PERSONALITY:
On first impression, Ichigo live up to his reputation as an anti-social tough guy; while this is much unlike his true personality, he enjoys keeping that lone wolf attribute as far as the public eye is concerned. Only those who he calls friend truly knows the depths of his character, seeing him as determined, compassionate, and driven by the need to do what is right, no matter the personal loss to himself. As a Shinigami, he possesses more endurance than experience, which has led to him toppling the very same people who would scold him for his lack of skill. It is seen that his determination is his true strength, forcing him to push onward where anyone else would quit, and even to surpass his own limitations when the need arises.

Conversely, there is a darker personality at work within him; the Hollow that developed within his soul at the time he gained his Shinigami powers. This part of Ichigo fights with supreme knowledge, equal or greater to a Captain level Shinigami, and the arrogance to match. It does not fight for just cause, but for it's own enjoyment, and could be easily considered the anti-thesis of Ichigo.

ABILITIES:
As a Shinigami, Ichigo possesses extremely high levels of Reiatsu, or Spiritual Power. This can partly be explained by the Hollow within him, which grants him immense power as a desperation tactic in the Soul Society Arc, and later as a short term boost of power after training with the Vaizard. The other source, shown to us as a Ichigo with glowing blue eyes, comes from a yet unknown source. This is believed to be due to his father, a high level Shinigami Captain, and even possibly his mother, who may yet have origins unknown to us.

In battle, Ichigo carries Zangetsu (Translated as "Cutting Moon") as his Zanpakutou. As can be plainly seen, Zangetsu is in a permanent state of Shikai, thus eliminating the need to unseal his weapon before combat. Rather than a typical sheath, the long silk scarf of the handle wraps itself around the blade when placed on the back, and retracts when in combat. It's chief ability is the Getsuga Tensho (Moon Sky-Piercing Fang) which releases a heavy concentration of spiritual energy as an offensive wave. Rather than employ stronger technique, Ichigo simply concentrates further levels of Reiatsu to match up to his enemy's more powerful attacks.

His Bankai, known as Tensa Zangetsu (Chains of Heaven - Cutting Moon), is often underestimated by the enemy, due to the fact that it actually decreases the size of the blade from a giant cleaver to a mere Katana. The weapon's true power, however, lies in it's ability to enhance Ichigo himself. It possesses the same level of power that the Shikai form does, meaning it is still capable of using the same striking force, but is concentrated into a finer form, which also allows Ichigo to run at a speed beyond even Shunpo (Flash Steps.) This speed was even capable of deflecting thousands of multi-angled attacks from the Bankai of Byakuya Kuchiki, a highly respected and powerful Shinigami Captain.

It is known that Ichigo had no formal training in Kido (Demon Arts) and thus is incapable of casting incantations like even basic Shinigami, but was able to self teach himself in the art of Shunpo while training for his Bankai. Shunpo allows for high speed movements, and is employed by most Captain and Lieutenant level Shinigami as a means of evading attacks and reaching distant locations in less time. Using Flash Steps, Ichigo is skilled enough to match even a Captain level for speed.

Ichigo's latest training has been alongside the Vaizard, a group of former Shinigami, who developed the powers of Hollow, much like Ichigo himself did before the Soul SOciety Arc. There, he was able to suppress his Hollow self by facing it in combat, allowing him to begin changing at will and having access to the powers permitted to him. He is only capable of short lengths of time as of yet, but is likely to improve as the story arc continues.

NAME:
Ichigo's first name has been open to debate, as it can mean several things that relate to his character. Officially, chigo's name means "Ichi" for "One" and "Go" for "Protector", as stated by him in episode 21 of the Anime. Other versions would say that his "Ichigo" can translate to "Strawberry", as a reference to his hair, or that the separation of the name into "Ichi" and "Go" can mean "one" and "five"; this can be seen as both his age, and the number that appear on his room door.

The name Kurosaki can be broken down to mean "Dark Destination" which can apply to several things within the series. This can mean Ichigo's battle of wills with his Hollow Self, as well as the fact that his family has met with much difficulty as a result of the spirit world, which took away Ichigo's mother, and constantly threatens his family.

Biography
CHARACTER HISTORY -
Rukia's history begins in Soul Society, as a child growing up in one of the poorer districts. She had been abandoned as a baby by her older sister, Hisana, and was taken in and taken care of until she was old enough to fend for herself. Her early life is defined by the company she kept, which included Lieutenant Renji Abarai, as they grew up stealing water in order to survive. of all their friends, they were the only two to live to see their teenage years, opting to join the Shinigami academy for a chance at a better life.

Though Renji appeared to be the better student, Rukia found herself with a powerful connection she never knew she had; her older sister, having regreted abandoning the infant Rukia, had implored to her husband, Byakuya Kuchiki, that he find and raise Rukia as his sister. Byakuya obeyed the deathbed request of his bride, adopting Rukia into his noble clan, with the additional offer of early graduation. Thus was the beginning of Rukia's career as a Shinigami, assigned to the Thirteenth Division under Jushiro Ukitake; an assignement that would see her far from the front lines where her life would be in greater danger.

There, she formed a bond with the Division Lieutenant, Kaien Shiba, and his wife. Kaien became a true friend to Rukia, while his wife was a role model in grace, beauty, and duty. When Kaien's loved one was killed by a Hollow, Rukia was by her Lieutenant's side as he sought revenge, only to be dealt another tragic hand; she was forced to kill Kaien in self-defenese when the Hollow took possession of his body. This experience would cause her great emotional harm and guilt for many years, making her unable to face the Shiba family in apology.

It is unknwon when she first was assigned the job of defending Karakura Town from Hollows and sending it's Pluses to Soul Society, but it wasn't long enough for her to become aware of the high spiritual powers of Ichigo Kurosaki until the night his home was attacked by a Hollow. There, she was badly injured defending Ichigo from a deadly attack, and transfered her powers to him. From there on, she stayed within a Gigai (False Body) and acted as a guide for Ichigo, who agreed to take over her duties.

This symbiosis would not last long, as Byakuya and Renji were sent to collect Rukia and return her to Soul Society. She went of her own free will, to assure Ichigo's safety in the matter, and was scheduled to be executed due to an elaborate plot by Aizen Sousuke in order to obtain the Hogyoku (Orb of Distortion) that Kisuke Urahara had hidden within her. There, she was saved by Ichigo's attempts, as well as intervention by Byakuya, who was badly injured protecting her from a fatal attack by Gin Ichimaru.

Since then, she has begun to regain her lost Shinigami powers, having been released from the Gigai that Urahara had created to keep her powers drained, and thus keeping Rukia, and the Hogyoku, from detection. She is seen during the Bount Filler arc as having her Kido powers at a much higher level than her restricted form allowed her in the beginning of the series, and as a full fledged Shinigami in the Arrancar Arc.

PERSONALITY -
Rukia is a proud indivdual, taking advantage to appear as high and mighty when she is more knowledgable of something than another person; among Ichigo and friends, this is often having to do with Spirits, while with Renji, it is human culture. Despite this attitude, she is surprisingly naive to many things, such as how to put a straw in a juice box. Her love of rabbit themed items is well known, as she often draws pictures portraying their form, and even hugged into a rabbit shaped purse worn by Orihime Inoue as she shouted declarations of love for it's appearance.

ABILITIES -
Rukia is seen to excel in Kido, or Demon Arts, and employs them for most of the series, as she is unable to use her Zanpakutou until the Arrancar Arc. Her knowledge is competent in both Binding and Destructive Arts, and she is shown to perform them with a degree of flexibility, making far jumps or evasions as she performs them. It is also known that she is capable of using Flash Step, though her skill is unknown due to lack of comparison alongside other users.

Her Zanpakutou is known as Sode no Shirayuki (Sleeve of White Snow) and is considered to be the most beautiful of it's kind in Soul Society, released by the trigger word "Mae" (Dance). The entire blade is white, and includes a sash attached to it's hilt, which is employed in one of it's abilities, Some no Mai, Tsukishiro (First Dance, White Moon) which freeze everything within the circle, created by her sash, from the ground up. This command also also implies that her possesses more, as of yet unknown abilities. It is unknown at this time if Rukia has a Bankai in her possession, but it is likely that she does not.

NAME -
The kanji in her name translates as "rotten wood" which can be seen in two ways. One could refer to her humble beginnings in a poor neighborhood, before her rise to nobility. The second is the fact that she spent so long with her full potential sealed away by her Gigai, essentially rotting away at the foundation of her strength by draining her Spiritual Power for so long. Either of these are open to arguement, as they are only possible thoughts.

Ishida Uryuu

Picture
Uryū Ishida (石田 雨竜, Ishida Uryū) is a classmate and companion of Ichigo Kurosaki and is introduced as the last Quincy. As such he first steps up as a rival upon learning that Ichigo became a Shinigami. Later events, however, make him join forces with Ichigo against common enemies, and he eventually becomes one of Ichigo's best and most reliable friends. He participates in the rescue of Rukia Kuchiki from her prison in Soul Society, and later helps Ichigo in an attempt to free Orihime Inoue from Hueco Mundo. In both cases he proves to be a valuable ally, as he is a quite adept and strong combatant, as well as extremely intelligent, which comes in handy in the various difficult situations that Ichigo and his other friends are presented with. Uryū was ranked the 5th most popular character of Bleach in the latest Shōnen Jump Poll.

Inoue Orihime

Picture
Orihime Inoue (井上 織姫, Inoue Orihime) is the classmate and friend of Ichigo Kurosaki, as well as one of the central characters in the series. Like many other friends of Ichigo, she quickly develops spiritual powers of her own after Ichigo becomes a Shinigami. Later, she is abducted and forced to leave for Hueco Mundo by the Arrancar, the enemies of Soul Society, as their leader has set his eyes on her unusual and potent powers. Ichigo and her other friends set out to rescue her, despite going against Soul Society's orders by doing so.

Sado Yasutora

Picture
Yasutora Sado (茶渡 泰虎, Sado Yasutora) is a teenager who studies in the same class as Ichigo Kurosaki. Because Ichigo first read Yasutora's name off a name tag, he pronounced his family name as Chad (チャド, Chado) due to the kanji, and Ichigo, as well as others continue to call him this throughout the series.

Arisawa Tatsuki

Picture
Tatsuki Arisawa (有沢 竜貴, Arisawa Tatsuki) is a student at the Karakura High School, in the same classroom as Ichigo Kurosaki, her childhood friend and karate partner. When they were children, Tatsuki regularly saved Ichigo when he was getting beaten up, as well as cheering him up when he was upset. A tomboyish karate practitioner with dreams of becoming a vale tudo champion, and already ranking Japan's second strongest in her age group, Tatsuki seems to possess no stereotypically feminine qualities as is typical of female manga characters. Her only obvious feminine trait is how she writes her name: using hiragana: (たつき), though this is because she thinks it looks feminine while she considers the kanji of her name un-cute.

Kojima Mizuiro

Picture
Mizuiro Kojima (小島 水色, Kojima Mizuiro) is a student in Karakura High School and is in the same class as Ichigo Kurosaki.
When Mizuiro first met Rukia Kuchiki, Ichigo warned her that he was sly with the ladies. Mizuiro countered by saying he prefers older women, Ichigo comments that Rukia should be careful, which leaves Mizuiro confused. He also likes to tease his classmate and friend Keigo by calling him "Asano-san" (Mr. Asano in the English dub), when he is overreacting, which makes him even more agitated.

Genryusai Shigekuni Yamamoto

Picture
General Yamamoto founded the Shinigami Academy about 2000 years before the current time. Yamamoto was himself a teacher at this academy, and personally instructed Shunsui Kyōraku and Jūshirō Ukitake. He admits to being rather proud of the two. When they became captains, he boasted about them as though they were his own sons.

Approximately 110 years ago Yamamoto is noted as being the oldest captain amongst the Gotei 13, being followed by Unohana, Shunsui and Ukitake. It is stated that the four of them have been Captains of the Gotei 13 for at least 200 years as of 110 years ago before the current time.

Shortly Yamamoto is seen pushing Kisuke Urahara into the First Division headquarters, so that he can start the promotion ceremony. Yamamoto explains that seven days ago there was an order to promote the 12th Division Captain Kirio Hikifune, which would leave her position open. He then notified the various captains at the opening and asked that they submit nominations for the selection of a new captain. Within the following day he got a recommendation from the 2nd Division Captain Yoruichi Shihōin to promote her 3rd Seat Urahara. The following day he calls Urahara in so that he can take the Captain Proficiency Test along with Retsu Unohana and Ginrei Kuchiki, so that they can confirm his qualities at being a captain. Having been satisfied with their findings they have appointed him Urahara the new Captain of the 12th Division.

10 years later Yamamoto calls a emergency meeting of the captains of the Gotei 13, where he gives a intelligence report on the unknown disappearances of the 9th Division captain Kensei Muguruma and lieutenant Mashiro Kuna as well as the other high ranking members of their division, who had previously been sent out out to investigate the disappearance of other division members. He then states he will choose 5 captains to form a investigation team. When a very winded and frantic Urahara shows up to ask that he be allowed to go with the investigation team as he had previously seen his lieutenant Hiyori Sarugaki to the sight of the disappearances. He is sumarily told no by General Yamamoto, when he protests he is chastisted by Yoruichi. Yamamoto continues on and selects 3rd Divisoin Captain Rōjūrō Otoribashi, 5th Division Captain Shinji Hirako, 7th Division Captain Love Aikawa, he tells them to head to the campground. He orders Yoruichi to stand by, while 6th Division Captain Ginrei Kuchiki, 8th Division Captain Shunsui Kyōraku and 13th Division Captain Jūshirō Ukitake to stay behind and guard the Seireitei. He orders Captain Unohana of the 4th Division prepare her relief stations for casualties. When Unohana insists that maybe she should tend to the wounded there, Yamamoto states that he cannot send healers without knowing what the situation is like. Upon the arrival of Tessai Tsukabishi the Kidō Captain of the Kidō Corps and his Kidō Lieutenant Hachigen Ushōda, Yamamoto asks if he has heard the news relaying that he wants the two of them to head to the campground as well. Shunsui interrupts and asks if its a good idea to send both the Kidō Captain and Kidō Lieutenant when they have no idea whats going on, prompting Yamamoto to ask what he would suggest. He resolves that they should send his Lieutenant Lisa Yadōmaru. With the squad forms he sends them out to investigate the disappearances.

Sasakibe Choujirou

Picture
Chōjirō Sasakibe (雀部 長次郎, Sasakibe Chōjirō) is the Lieutenant of the 1st Division.
 Soul Society arc

Initially seen attending the Lieutenant meeting as Ichigo Kurosaki's group are launched into the Seireitei by Kūkaku Shiba, Chōjirō is seen with his captain Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto everywhere he goes, including Rukia's execution on Sōkyoku Hill.

He is directly ordered by Yamamoto (along with Isane Kotetsu and Marechiyo Ōmaeda) to stop Renji Abarai after he runs off with Rukia Kuchiki. However, shortly after the three of them give chase, Ichigo Kurosaki gets in their way. Chōjirō, like his fellow lieutenants, releases his Zanpakutō, but is defeated bare-handed by the Ryoka -- not held back like Isane or crushed with his weapon like Ōmaeda, but rather getting punched in the jaw. Out of the three, he was the only one fast enough to react and attack, though Ichigo easily dodged.
Arrancar arc

Sasakibe is seen twice in this arc: first behind Yamamoto after calling an assembly with the appearance of the Grand Fisher Arrancar in Karakura town, then again assisting his Captain in restraining Momo Hinamori after she goes off course on saving Sōsuke Aizen in a conversation with Tōshirō Hitsugaya.
Shūsuke Amagai arc

Near the beginning of the arc, shortly after Shūsuke Amagai is appointed captain of the third division, he is seen talking with Yamamoto about the need to fill the vacant captain positions. He is seen briefly when trying to stop Renji Abarai from going into the captain-commander's room, however Renji just walks past him.
Fake Karakura Town arc

Initially seen with the arrival of the Shinigami, he subsequently disappeared once the battles started. However, when the Vizard arrived, Shinji explained that they found him outside the barrier and that it was Sasakibe who let them through the barrier around Fake Karakura. Sasakibe apologies to Yamamoto for allowing the Vizard in, saying he thought it was necessary given the circumstances, but before he can finish Yamamoto forgives his actions.
Zanpakutō Unknown Tales arc

At the beginning of the arc, Sasakibe goes to check the nature of the disturbances outside of the Captain-Commander's office. What happens next is unknown. However, he is later seen arriving on the Sōkyoku Hill where he falls unconscious in front of all the gathered officers. Captain Unohana diagnoses him with a cardiac arrest and orders immediate treatment measures. He is later shown recovering with the other wounded.

SoiFon

Picture
Soifon was born Shaolin Fon (蜂 梢綾,  Fong Shaolin in the Pinyin transliteration of Mandarin Chinese) into the Fon house, one of the lower noble houses affiliated with the Shihōin noble house. She was in the 9th Generation of her family and as the youngest of six siblings she joined the Executive Militia of the Onmitsukidō as was tradition in her family. Upon joining the militia, she dropped her given name Shaolin Fon, and inherited the code name that her great-grandmother used, Soifon. Out of her five older siblings, two died on the first mission, then two more on the second. The last one died on the sixth mission
7 years after she joined the the Executive Militia, she was transferred to the militia's corps-commanders, Yoruichi Shihōin personal guards. Yoruichi took the young Soifon under her wing as her protégée, and they developed a close relationship.

110 years ago, Soifon, in her capacity as a head of the guard, was highly protective of Yoruichi and her honor. She had a short temper when it came to Kisuke Urahara and Yoruichi's intention of putting him up for promotion to be the new captain of the 12th division, she saw his carefree attitude as him being lazy and bad at his job. Soifon confronts Yoruichi, concerned that she is overestimating Urahara's capabilities, Soifon proceeds to explain that she believes it was a mistake to even appoint him as Corps Commander of the Detention Unit. Soifon goes on to say that he is undeserving of such a position. While Yoruichi readily admits to the fact that Urahara is not really a hard worker, she dismisses Soifon's criticisms and playfully insinuates that her focus on him must have romantic connotations, Soifon denies it entire and stalks off. After spending the day following Urahara around Soul Society taking notes, she returns to the 2nd Division barracks to show Yoruichi her evidence of Urahara's lack of competence in his position. Soifon arrives to find Urahara already there talking with Yoruichi, she is then told that Urahara will be taking the captain proficiency exam, to which Soifon stands in disbelief. Yoruichi confirms it and further asks that Soifon attend the exam as well. She explains that normally only captains are allowed to attend but that she has asked special permission to allow Soifon to attend. Soifon is at first confused about why she should attend but Yoruichi tells her there is no need to keep secrets as she knows she is attracted to Urahara, though Soifon denies it, Yoruichi explains that she knows all about how Soifon has been following him around all day. Soifon admits that she was following Urahara around but tells her it was to prove that he is lazy and slothful and not worthy of Yoruichi's praise. Soifon hands her note to Yoruichi, who reads them and comments on how detailed they are, when Urahara doesn't deny any of the information in the report Soifon is shocked that he would be so truthful to his seemingly unprofessional actions. Yoruichi unsurprised quips that Urahara never changes as well as praising Soifon for her intelligence gathering skills. At first Soifon was happy until she realized that Yoruichi regarded the notes not as intelligence information but rather as a love letter. Soifon is reasonably distressed and Yoruichi laughs it off and tells her to loosen up as she wasn't serious. They are then interrupted by the arrival of a squad member who delivers the message that the people Urahara has been looking for has been found, though Soifon comments on if he doesn't return in time that it will put a strain of the 2nd Divisions reputation as well as Yoruichi. To which Yoruichi simply dismisses tell Urahara to hurry off to his duty and telling Soifon to come along to help prepare for his the captain's proficiency test. She follows Urahara and his men to a remote area where Shinigami defectors are hiding and watches as Urahara enters the building by himself. She then bears witness to his advanced spiritual pressure and is amazed to find he single handily defeated all the defectors with only Hakuda.

A day or so after Urahara takes over the 12th Division, Yoruichi is told by a Onmitsukidō member that Urahara has entered into the Detention Unit property with claims that he was previously given approval to be there. Yoruichi can't seem to recall when or even if he asked for permission or whether she granted it, but when asked if she would have him removed seeing as she can't recall she nonchalantly tells her division members to not bother and to allow him to go where he likes. When asked if she has remembered the incident in question, Yoruichi plainly says no. Soifon becomes distressed and prepares to voice her disapproval, Yoruichi tells her to calm down as its Kisuke they are talking about, stating he must have had an idea of some kind.

9 years later when Yoruichi leaves Soul Society to help her exiled friend Urahara, she abandoned all of her titles. Soifon felt betrayed by Yoruichi's abandonment and the circumstances surrounding them. As a result, she trained herself in order to surpass Yoruichi and take the titles she abandoned. She ultimately unified the Onmitsukidō as well as the Punishment Force after Yoruichi disappeared.

Omaeda Marechiyo

Picture
Ōmaeda is an arrogant and dull man. He is cowardly, loud, vain, elitist, snobbish, greedy, and sluggish. Contradicting his normal behaviors and mannerisms he is exceedingly loyal to his captain, to the point that he is willing to fight along with his captain against enemies a lot stronger than him; his willingness to take an attack aimed at his captain, act as a temporary decoy, and cut off Soifon's arm at her request shows that Marechiyo holds a great deal of loyalty to his captain.

He likes to eat fried rice crackers (abura senbei) wherever he is. His captain is known to beat him up when the crumbs from the crackers fall on her hair. It is also known however, that he does not like fish.

Marechiyo is shown to come from a rich family. As is typical of many rich families, he has a long name, Marechiyo Yoshiayamenosuke Nikkōtarōemon Ōmaeda (大前田 日光田郎右衛門 美菖蒲介 希千代, Ōmaeda Nikkōtarōemon Yoshiayamenosuke Marechiyo). His father is named Marenoshin, his mother is Mareka, his older sister is Maremi, his younger brother is Marejirōsaburō, and his younger sister is Mareyo. With the exception of his younger sister, all closely resemble him. Mareyo is more normal looking and sweet, which shocks Izuru Kira, Renji Abarai, and Shūhei Hisagi (these three are replaced by Ichigo Kurosaki and Rukia Kuchiki in the anime's equivalent sketch). Marechiyo thinks his younger sister is ugly. It is also remarked here that he enjoys inviting commoners to his home, probably only to show off his wealth. He is often taken advantage of by his fellow Lieutenant Shūhei Hisagi, who often comes and eats Marechiyo's extra food when he is low on cash.

Marechiyo's specialty is making bracelets, as he can craft gold. All the jewels seen on him are made by himself. He owns a factory named "Ōmaeda Gem-Precious Metals Factory", which makes jewelery. He fries any slacking workers with his yet unknown ability, the "Marechiyo Chop".

Being rich, he was able to install the 2nd Division quarters with floor heating, automatic doors and cooling/heating system

3rd Division

Ichimaru Gin

Picture
Not much is known about Gin's prior history, except that he once saved 10th Division Lieutenant Rangiku Matsumoto's life when they were younger, as she almost died from hunger. They have been friends since then. Hence, Matsumoto is one of the few people Gin seems to truly care about.

Over a 100 years ago before the current time, when Gin was a child he was considered a genius graduating from the Shinigami Academy after just one year, and was already to become a seated position in the 5th Division. When he had met Aizen for the first time he already killed the 3rd seat of the 5th Division, calling him worthless, showing that even as a child Gin's powers approached Lieutenant level, and also that he could kill anyone in cold blood, if it served his interests. Aizen immediately gave him the 3rd seat of the Division after the incident, about which they both kept secret.

It was around this time that Gin became involved in Aizen's plot and pledged his full loyalty to him, becoming a part of his plans and assisting in the Hollowfication of high ranking Shinigami.

Sometime later Gin served as the lieutenant of 5th Division Captain Sōsuke Aizen before becoming captain of the 3rd Division around the same time that Byakuya Kuchiki became captain of the 6th Division. Gin, even as a captain of his own division, was still a loyal subordinate to Aizen

Kira Izuru

Picture
Izuru Kira (吉良 イヅル, Kira Izuru) is the Lieutenant of the 3rd Division in the Gotei 13.
Izuru Kira was born to a family of lesser nobility, his parents having been dead since he was young. While in the Shinigami Academy, Izuru befriended Momo Hinamori, Renji Abarai, and Shūhei Hisagi, and they are often seen spending time together. After graduation, Izuru, along with Renji and Momo, were sent to the 5th Division, where he stayed until Gin Ichimaru became captain of the 3rd Division. It was revealed during the Fake Karakura arc, that Izuru spent some time in the 4th Division, as noted by Shūhei, and the fact that he carries medical implements like shinten, a trait virtually exclusive to members of the 4th Division

4th Division

Unohana Retsu

Picture
Although not much is revealed about her past, it is said that she has been a captain for at least 200 years; along with fellow captains Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto, Jūshirō Ukitake and Shunsui Kyōraku. This makes her one of the oldest captains among the Gotei 13, despite her rather youthful appearance. Ukitake also refers to her a "Senpai" denoting her seniority to both him and Shunsui.

She is seen waiting for the promotion ceremony to begin at the 1st Division Headquarters along with the rest of the assembled captains. She witnesses the arrival of the newly appointed Captain of the 12th Division, Kisuke Urahara. Her lieutenant at this time was Seinosuke Yamada.

9 years later Unohana is present at a emergency meeting called by Captain-Commander Yamamoto. When he decides to create a investigation team to locate the missing 9th Division squad members. When he gives out orders, Yamamoto orders Unohana to prepare the relief stations for casualties, but Unohana interrupts and asks if it wouldn't be better for her to tend to the wounded there. Yamamoto plainly tells her that he can't send healers out without knowing what the situation is like

Kotetsu Isane

Picture
Isane Kotetsu (虎徹 勇音, Kotetsu Isane) is the lieutenant of the 4th Division, the medical and supply relief division, in Gotei 13 under Captain Retsu Unohana.
Isane is the older sister of Kiyone Kotetsu, one of the two 3rd seated officers in the 13th Division. Unlike Kiyone, she is generally quiet and observant, though she shares her sister's sense of loyalty. However unlike her captain, she can be impatient in the face of an enemy, rushing after enemies she has no chance of defeating, including the seemingly unstoppable Sōsuke Aizen. She looks to Unohana as a mentor and mother figure. It is noted by Unohana that Isane suffers from frequent and recurring nightmares. This is sometimes used as material for jokes, as Isane's nightmares are often odd or whimsical in their contents. For example, she once had a nightmare involving kamaboko (a fishcake made of pureed surimi), which she intensely dislikes. Her favorite food, on the other hand, is porridge, to the extent that she is capable of eating it as the three main meals on the same day.

Isane's exceptional height for a female Shinigami is often material for jokes. She started eating porridge when she passed 170 cm in her growth, because she did not want to get any taller (she believes - wrongly - that the nutrient level of porridge is very low). Unfortunately for her, she did not stop until reaching 187 cm, her height being another source of frustration for her.Her height is also mentioned on one of the assemblies of the Shinigami Women's Association, during which she proposes a cell phone sturdy enough to not break if it is dropped from a height of 2 meters, only to be told by Nanao Ise that it is not a common problem.Once, after hearing of how sleeping helps children grow, she decides to not sleep again in order to halt her growth.

When Isane has time off, she goes to see Kiyone, and vice-versa. They're very close sisters who enjoy meeting up and having fun together. Recently, her favorite place to hang out is the Kuchiki estate, in the "secret base of the Shinigami Women's Association". She is a notable member of the latter Association, where her meek nature occasionally gets her in troubles with group activities including getting captured alongside Nemu Kurotsuchi when attempting to take a picture of Byakuya Kuchiki.

5th Division

Aizen Sousuke

Picture
Little is known of Aizen's past, except that he spent much of his career in the 5th Division, eventually becoming its lieutenant under the former Captain, Shinji Hirako. Shinji kept Aizen under his view during this time because he felt there was something dangerous about him. Also, during that time, Aizen met Gin Ichimaru and Kaname Tōsen, and somehow managed to lure them to his side.
One hundred years ago from the current time, Aizen engaged in early experiments on Shinigami/Hollow hybrids which involved using an unknown device to cause spirits to transform into Hollows. He is responsible for turning his former captain Shinji and seven other Shinigami into Vizards in the first place.

Aizen became Captain of the 5th Division later on, and Gin eventually became his lieutenant and right hand man. Gin and Tōsen later became Captains of the 3rd and 9th Divisions, respectively, but remained loyal only to Aizen. According to Aizen, even when Hinamori was his lieutenant, he thought of no one but Gin as his subordinate.

At some point, he also saw the potential of Momo Hinamori, Izuru Kira, and Renji Abarai, and took them all into his division. While Kira and Hinamori were obedient and loyal, becoming the Lieutenants of the 3rd and 5th Divisions under Gin and Aizen, respectively, Renji proved to be too rebellious and was transferred to the 11th Division (and later to the 6th, where he too became a Lieutenant).

Also, at some point before the storyline begins, he, alongside Captains Gin and Tōsen, secretly visit King Barragan of Hueco Mundo and defeat his army, securing their position as the rulers of Hueco Mundo.

Hinamori Momo

Picture
Momo grew up in Junrinan, District 1 of Rukongai, along with Tōshirō Hitsugaya. While Hitsugaya tended to be a bit of a brat as a child, Momo found him amusing and treated him like a younger brother. The two have a close friendship, reflected by Momo giving him the nickname Shiro-chan (Lil' Shiro in the English dub) although Momo is older and Tōshirō is younger, it gives him the best reason to protect her. Even more, the two are very close and will protect each other as a promise they made to each other. When Momo entered the Shinigami Academy, she excelled at Kidō. It was there that she met Izuru Kira and Renji Abarai, who soon became her friends and, later, her fellow lieutenants.

Her friendship with Izuru Kira and Renji Abarai began back in the Shinigami Academy on a standard field exercise to the real world to practice performing the Konsō (Soul Burial), and combat with artificial Hollow replicas. The exercise was led by Shūhei Hisagi. Everything went well until a group of huge Hollows attacked them. Shūhei told everyone to run, but Momo turned to see Shūhei being attacked by multiple Hollows. She ran to help him, and was followed, somewhat reluctantly, by Renji and Izuru.

Backup arrived in the form of Fifth Division, Captain Aizen and then Lieutenant Gin Ichimaru.Momo began idolizing Aizen from that moment. He knew that, and manipulated the system to make sure that Izuru, Renji, and Momo were all sent to his division upon graduation. He perceived hard-headed Renji as a threat to his scheme and had him sent out of the divisions he controlled, but sent Izuru to the Third Division, which was now captained by Gin. He kept Momo in the Fifth Division, and she worked her way up the ladder to be Aizen’s Lieutenant (through much hard work as noted by Hitsugaya).

It is revealed that both she and Izuru Kira are the ones who presented Renji with the news of his promotion to the 6th Division as their new lieutenant. Ikkaku Madarame tells Renji that due to his promotion, he is now closer to Rukia in status and that he should renew his friendship with her. Izuru also informs him that Rukia is being stationed in the Human World, and Momo urges Renji to go after her before it's too late, but Renji refuses, stating that it's not official until the ceremony anyway, and that he'd rather surprise her with his new promotion after she returned

6th Division

Kuchiki Byakuya

Picture
Byakuya was born into the Kuchiki family, one of the four noble families. Byakuya grew up in the Kuchiki Mansion in the Seireitei of Soul Society. He would spend countless hours training, in preparation of taking over the leadership of the Kuchiki family and the 6th Division from his grandfather, Ginrei Kuchiki.

Yoruichi appeared to be on good terms with the members of the Kuchiki noble family as she would often visit the Kuchiki manor to play tag with Byakuya. On one such occasion she is presented to a training Byakuya by his grandfather Ginrei Kuchiki, the head of the Kuchiki family as well as the 6th Division captain. Upon seeing the arrival of Yoruichi, he swings his sword at her and calls her a demon cat. Yoruichi laughs and playful begins to tease him, calling him 'Little Byakuya', complaining why such a greeting after she came all the way there to see him. Byakuya yells at her that he would never want to see the likes of her and that he will be the head of the Kuchiki clan soon enough so he has no time to waster on her. Yoruichi asks if that is the case as she steals the ribbon holding his hair back, Byakuya quickly turns and swings his sword at her but she uses Shunpo to move to the roof of a nearby building. Yoruichi laughs at him and exclaims that if the head of clan Kuchiki can get his hair tie stolen by a girl at play, then she would worry about the future of the clan, in order to entire him into another game of tag. Not to be defeated so easily Byakuya tells her not to move an inch, but before he could finish she tells him that he cant catch her as she uses Shunpo again to begin the chase. Byakuya plainly states that now he sees she wishes to incite his wrath, and he promises to make her see the error of her ways, further making the claim that his Shunpo is far superior to the likes of hers.

55 years ago Byakuya married Hisana Kuchiki, who was a commoner from Rukongai; therefore, he broke the rules by accepting her into the noble Kuchiki family. 5 years later she became sick and was near death. Shortly before her passing, Hisana asked Byakuya to find and adopt her biological sister, Rukia, whom she had abandoned as a baby. She also made him promise that he would not tell Rukia about her real family, for she believed that by abandoning Rukia when she was younger, she was not worthy to be called her sister.

One year later, Rukia entered the Shinigami Academy. Shortly after, Byakuya found her and immediately adopted her into the Kuchiki clan. By adopting her, Byakuya respected his late wife's final wish, but had broken the rules of his clan again. He later swore upon his parents' graves that he would never break the rules again, no matter what. As a result, he, though entirely apathetic on the surface, is actually deeply conflicted with the matter of Rukia's execution: should he intervene, it would require breaking the promise to his parents and the rules again, but should he do nothing, he would fail to fulfill the last promise he made to his dying wife to protect Rukia as his own sister.

Not long before Rukia joined the Gotei 13, Byakuya became the captain of the 6th Division (less then 49 years ago). Gin Ichimaru became captain of the 3rd Division at the same time, and Gin would commonly start pointless conversations with Byakuya during times they crossed paths.

Abarai Renji

Picture
Renji Abarai was born in the 78th district of Rukongai and grew up as an orphan, in "Inuzuri" South Alley of Flowing Spirits with several other children, including Rukia Kuchiki. The company of children lived by stealing or hunting for food. Though Renji and Rukia quickly discovered they had spiritual powers, they remained with their friends until they all died, which prompted them to become Shinigami for a better life.

At the Shinigami academy, Renji was admitted into the top class, being very adept at swordsmanship, although quite inept at Kidō. His senpai was Shūhei Hisagi. At the academy, Renji befriended Izuru Kira and Momo Hinamori, who each proceeded to become lieutenants. He was a graduate of the academy in its 2,066th year. His relationship with Rukia became distant after her adoption by the Kuchiki family since he felt he had no place interfering with her life now that she was a noble, despite the fact they both seemed to regret losing the company and confidence of the other. Abarai decided it was best to let her enjoy life as a noble, telling himself not to interfere no matter what happens.

Renji, Kira and Hinamori served under Sōsuke Aizen and Gin Ichimaru in the 5th division, after which Kira and Hinamori were put under Ichimaru and Aizen in the 3rd and 5th divisions respectively. The rebellious Renji was moved to the 11th Division and eventually rose to the 6th seat. During his time in the 11th Division, he befriended Ikkaku Madarame, who taught Renji how to fight. It was also shown that Renji was aware that Ikkaku had a Bankai, but refused to use it to train Renji. On the same day Rukia headed for the human world, Renji was promoted to lieutenant of the 6th Division.Izuru, Momo and Ikkaku knew about his past with Rukia, and told him that if they were such great friends he must go to her immediately before her departure. However, instead of going to see Rukia off, he decided to wait and surprise her three months later when the promotion ceremony was complete (along with her assignment). Unfortunately by this time he was sent to bring her back to Soul Society. After meeting Byakuya Kuchiki, the 6th Division's captain, Renji's greatest dream has been to surpass him in strength.

7th Division

Komamura Sajin

Picture
Sajin Komamura (狛村 左陣, Komamura Sajin) is the Captain of the 7th Division and is the tallest captain of the Gotei 13. He has the appearance of an anthropomorphic canine, easily making him the captain with the strongest build-up, except for maybe Kenpachi Zaraki. For a long time, he has been self-conscious about his appearance and has hidden his face behind a helmet until the betrayal of three of Gotei 13's captains, one of whom was his close friend, Kaname Tōsen. Following the incident, he doesn't wear his helmet anymore. His Lieutenant is Tetsuzaemon Iba.
One day, while sitting on a grassy area, Komamura is sensed by Tōsen, who didn't know where he was (due to his blindness). It was only when Komamura spoke that he realized he had talked in the wrong direction. Complimenting Komamura’s ability to hide his presence very well, Tōsen noted that he had never been able to not feel someone’s presence before, even though his eyes cannot see. Komamura was highly touched, for this was the first time that he wasn't looked upon as an outcast.

Although it is currently unknown where Komamura originated, Yamamoto gave him the opportunity to join the Gotei 13 even if he wasn't human.

Later, they meet time and again during their time in the Gotei 13, and Aizen is introduced to Komamura through Tōsen.

Iba Tetsuzaemon

Picture
Tetsuzaemon Iba (射場 鉄左衛門, Iba Tetsuzaemon) is the Lieutenant of the 7th Division of the Gotei 13, under Captain Sajin Komamura.

Iba was originally from the 11th Division and Ikkaku Madarame's superior, but transferred to the 7th Division because getting promoted to lieutenant in the 11th Division was more difficult, if not impossible. It is rumored that he wished to become a lieutenant not out of personal ambition, but to please his mother. As a result, his former compatriots in the 11th Division look down upon him, as they deem the other divisions weaker than they are. In spite of this, he has a habit of hanging around their division's headquarters. Despite having left the 11th Division, it is clear he still enjoys a good fight, and during his duels with Ikkaku reveals a maniacal grin much like his sparring partner.

8th Division

Kyouraku Shunsui

Picture
Shunsui Kyōraku (京楽 春水, Kyōraku Shunsui) is the Captain of the 8th Division in the Gotei 13. His lieutenant is Nanao Ise.

Shunsui is the second son of the high-ranking noble Kyōraku family. Despite being of such old and prestigious lineage, he disliked studying and training, and preferred to chase the ladies, although being told by General Yamamoto that he was able to see the truth and was wise for his age. Because of this, he was sent against his will to the Shin'ō Reijutsu Academy (Shinigami Academy). While there he came to know Jūshirō Ukitake who would become his best friend and fellow captain. He, along with Jūshirō Ukitake, was one of the first Shinigami to become a captain through the Shinigami academy. Furthermore, he was personally trained by Yamamoto. He and Ukitake are the oldest captains amongst the Gotei 13, with the exception of Retsu Unohana and Yamamoto himself. It is stated that the four of them have been Captains of the Gotei 13 for at least 200 years as of 110 years ago before the current time

110 years ago, he is present at the introduction of Kisuke Urahara as the new Captain of the 12th Division. He is shown to have a unique relationship with his Lieutenant Lisa Yadōmaru, though in contrast to his relationship with his current Lieutenant Nanao Ise, Lisa is more outgoing and perverted in a way much like his own personality. But he finds that his position requires him to be the "adult" in the situation. He is also the one to first mention casually to a inquisitive Lt. Aizen that the previous 12th Division Captain was promoted to the Royal Guard. 10 years later when the 9th Division Captain Kensei Muguruma and Lieutenant Mashiro Kuna disappear while investigating mysterious deaths in Rukongai, he suggests to Yamamoto that instead of sending both the Captain of the Kidō Corps. Tessai Tsukabishi and his Lieutenant Hachigen Ushōda, his own Lieutenant should go in their place. He tries to cheer up a shaken Kisuke Urahara, telling him not to worry about his Lieutenant, Hiyori Sarugaki, who was sent to help the 9th Division, because she is strong, though not as strong as Lisa.

During a night-walk he meets up some squad members, and also notices Sōsuke Aizen taking a night walk. Later in his barracks he is addressed by a very young Nanao Ise, who has come to see his Lieutenant, Lisa Yadōmaru. Shunsui then remembers that Nanao always comes to him around the first of every month to have Lisa read to her. Nanao confirms this, only to be told that Lisa is away on a mission, but should be back soon.

Ise Nanao

Picture
Nanao Ise (伊勢 七緒, Ise Nanao) is the lieutenant of the Eighth Division of the Gotei 13, under Captain Shunsui Kyōraku, and Vice-President of the Shinigami Women's Association.

Nanao is notable for being in 8th Division when she was a little girl, and enjoyed being read to by former lieutenant Lisa Yadōmaru, something they did regularly each month around the time of the first. Eventually between the period when Lisa was forced to hide alongside the other transformed Vizards and the present day, she worked her way up from being Shunsui's subordinate to his lieutenant

9th Division

Tousen Kaname

Picture
Kaname Tōsen (東仙 要, Tōsen Kaname) was formerly the blind Captain of the 9th Division of the Gotei 13, he has since left Soul Society after it is revealed that he was a co-conspirator working for recently revealed traitor Sōsuke Aizen. He has since become a Commander in Aizen's Army of Arrancar. Tōsen follows a personal philosophy which shapes his outlook on life, stating he follows the path that leads to the least bloodshed. He uses the philosophy as the basis of his supporting Aizen in his plan to overthrow Soul Society. The entire ordeal has put him at odds with his formerly closest friend Sajin Komamura as well as his former Lieutenant in the 9th Division Shūhei Hisagi.

Tōsen dedicated his life to following the path with the least bloodshed when a woman special to him died. She herself followed this path and Tōsen idolized her for it. Her dream was to become a Shinigami and use her powers to maintain a peaceful world. Soon after she was accepted by the Shinou Academy, however, her husband killed her because she scolded him for killing a comrade over a petty argument. From that moment on Tōsen took vowed that he would fight for justice without unnecessary bloodshed from then on. Shortly after, Tōsen joined the Shinigami Academy and became a Shinigami.

Tōsen met up with his now good friend, Sajin Komamura, while he was still in the Shinigami Academy. They took to each other quickly, because at that point Komamura was ashamed of his fox head and Tōsen could not see it. Komamura joined the Shinigami and they became close friends and eventually captains in the Gotei 13, though the exact details aren't known. Before being transferred into the 9th Division, it was known that Tōsen was in the 5th Division. When Sōsuke Aizen was still the lieutenant of the 5th Division, Tōsen was already on good terms with him.

A century before the main storyline, Tōsen was the 5th Seat of the 9th Division under captain Kensei Muguruma. At this point, he was already Aizen's subordinate, as he betrayed the 9th Division by stabbing Kensei in the back and killed Kasaki, Shinobu Eishima and Todō Gizaeimon, who were accompanying Kensei. He subsequently subdued the team sent to locate the missing 9th Division members using his Bankai. When a weakened and wounded Shinji asked why he betrayed his captain, Aizen appears declaring it was under his orders that he did it.

One day, when Kenpachi Zaraki came into Seireitei and killed the former captain of the 11th Division, ever since that day, Tōsen saw Kenpachi as a monster who served no purpose but to create chaos and would eventually break the tenuous peace of Soul Society

Hisagi Shuuhei

Picture
Shūhei Hisagi (檜佐木 修兵, Hisagi Shūhei) is the lieutenant of the 9th Division, formerly under Captain Kaname Tōsen.

Approximately 100 years before the current story line, a young Hisagi and several of his playmates fell prey to a Hollow attack in Rukongai. Luckily, it wasn't long until they were saved by Kensei Muguruma and the 9th Division. After defeating the Hollow, Kensei attempted to cheer Hisagi up (albeit with a slightly scary, demanding manner) and asked his name. This was when Hisagi saw Kensei's "69" tattoo on his chest and acquired the inspiration to get the same tattoo on his cheek.

Hisagi was already a famous Shinigami even before becoming a seated officer. He began taking missions with the Gotei 13 when he was still a student of the Shinigami Academy. During his last year of study, Hisagi and two of his classmates, Kanisawa and Aoga, were assigned to lead a field lesson on performing the Konsō with Freshman Class One, the class which Renji Abarai, Izuru Kira, and Momo Hinamori were members of. All went well until the end of the lesson, when a group of giant hollows took the class by surprise.

As both Kanisawa and Aoga were killed, Hisagi ordered all the freshmen to run and tried to fend off the hollows himself until help arrived. However, he was quickly overpowered, and if Renji, Izuru, and Momo hadn't turned back to help, he could easily have died then and there. Fortunately, back-up arrived in the form of Captain Aizen and his then Lieutenant, Gin Ichimaru. The scars on Hisagi’s face were acquired in that incident.

Kira mentioned that Hisagi failed the entrance exam for the academy twice. However, his talent allowed him to become a seated officer in the Gotei 13 without having to pass additional tests in the end

10th Division

Hitsugaya Toushiro

Picture
Tōshirō Hitsugaya (日番谷 冬獅郎, Hitsugaya Tōshirō) is the Captain of the 10th Division in the Gotei 13. His lieutenant is Rangiku Matsumoto. Hitsugaya plays the main character in the Bleach-based film Bleach: The DiamondDust Rebellion. Hitsugaya was voted the most popular character in Bleach in the most recent character poll. Hyōrinmaru, Hitsugaya's Zanpakutō, was also voted the most popular Zanpakutō in a recent Bleach Poll

Hitsugaya comes from the province of Junrin'an in the 1st District of West Rukongai. There, he lived with his grandmother and Momo Hinamori. As a child, Hitsugaya was a bit of a brat who likes to eat watermelons and poke fun at Hinamori. She calls him "Shiro-chan" (Little Shiro in the English dub) and he retorts by calling her "Bed-wetter Momo." The two are close friends and Hitsugaya, despite being younger and much shorter than his friend, always feels that he needs to protect her.

When Hinamori left to become a Shinigami, he stayed behind despite knowing about his power. Her friends from next door were scared of him, although he does nothing to them, and does not visit or talk to him at all. "Granny" and Hinamori are the only ones in the district that weren't afraid of him. He was supposedly "cold as ice" or at least thought to be, and he often wondered if it was due to his appearance or attitude. After Momo had been in the Shinigami Academy for 5 years he began to notice how he hadn't grown an inch, while Hinamori's hair grew longer and she visited less often, seeming to have a goal in life now, and "Granny" was getting skinnier.

It was there that he met Rangiku Matsumoto. She yelled at a shop keeper who was being rude to him and then at him for "lying there crying about it and not standing up like a man" although it was her who knocked him down with her large breasts in the first place, but he shook her off and ran away. During that night he had a vivid dream of his Zanpakutō's spirit not only calling out to him (like in previous nights), but actually materializing in front of him in the form of a large dragon, and trying to tell him its name, which was unfortunately muffled by the strong winds. Soon after, Rangiku was able to track him down and woke him up, telling him that his Reiatsu was uncontrolled and leaking all over the place so it was causing Granny to freeze and get sicker, which may also explain why she got thinner. It was possible that if he stayed for too long while his reiatsu was still uncontrolled, he might have killed her. Rangiku told him to become a Shinigami in order to learn how to control his Reiatsu.

With Hitsugaya's natural talent, he quickly entered the Shinigami Academy and graduated early despite his age. Hinamori continued to call him "Shirō-chan" out of habit and felt she needed to protect him. Because of a promise she had made, she only began to call him "Hitsugaya-kun" after he had achieved his Zanpakutō's Shikai and was recognized as a Shinigami. Highly capable and knowledgeable, he quickly became the youngest of the captains within the Gotei 13 in the entire history of Soul Society.

He is also a friend of Jidanbō Ikkanzaka, the West Gate Keeper, who taught him the "city rules."

Matsumoto Rangiku

Picture
Rangiku Matsumoto (松本 乱菊, Matsumoto Rangiku) is Lieutenant of the 10th Division of the Gotei 13, Serving under Captain Tōshirō Hitsugaya

Not much is known or mentioned about Rangiku's past. She came from Rukongai and was rescued as a child by Gin Ichimaru; the two soon became friends. She was once asked by Ichimaru during her childhood when her birthday was. She replied that she did not know because she never counted days until she met him. Rangiku also had been alone for as far as she could remember. This possibly means she was orphaned since birth. When he heard about this, Ichimaru told her that if this was the case, then her birthday should be set on the day they met (the day she was not alone anymore).

It is unknown how she became a Shinigami or how she became lieutenant of the 10th Division. Despite that fact, it is known that she was the one who convinced Tōshirō Hitsugaya to become a Shinigami by confronting him that his leaking reiatsu was the cause of his grandmother's sickness and why she was getting thinner.

11th Division

Zaraki Kenpachi

Picture
Kenpachi Zaraki (更木 剣八, Zaraki Kenpachi) is the Captain of the 11th Division in the Gotei 13. Among the current captains in the Gotei 13, he's the only Captain to have obtained his position by defeating and killing the previous Captain of the division. He's also the only Captain who doesn't know the name of his Zanpakutō and can't perform its Bankai. He is well-known for his blood-lust and fanatical love for fighting. His Lieutenant is Yachiru Kusajishi.

Kenpachi's surname comes from the district he once resided in, Zaraki, which is district #80 of the North Alley of Rukongai. District #80 is the worst, most lawless region of Rukongai, full of thieves and murderers (whereas area #1 is the most orderly and law-abiding). While residing in District #80, Kenpachi was nameless. During that time, he became proficient in swordsmanship and killed numerous enemies. During his travels outside of District #80, he found a small girl and named her Yachiru, in remembrance of the only person he ever admired, after she showed no fear of his sword. Yachiru came from area #79, Kusajishi, where her parents were murdered. The two events were apparently quite close. On that day, he also took on a name: Kenpachi, the title bestowed upon the strongest Shinigami in every generation, the one who has slain the most enemies and won the most battles. Before he became a captain, he fought and defeated Ikkaku Madarame; he was told by Kenpachi to accept the defeat and survive so he can then became stronger in order to get revenge, from that point on Ikkaku pledged to serve under Kenpachi from there on out, (Ikkaku doesn't actually get the chance to do so until he joins the 11th Division).

After some time had passed, Kenpachi found his way to Seireitei. There he defeated and killed the previous Captain of the 11th Division (whose name was also Kenpachi due to it being a nickname assigned to the Captain of the 11th Division regardless of who it may be) and gained his seat in the Gotei 13 in this manner (according to the 3rd Captain Qualification Trial). It was his assumption of the captain's seat in this way which caused Maki Ichinose to leave Soul Society; it was also this action that made Kaname Tōsen revile him. Once he achieved this, Ikkaku, along with his friend Yumichika Ayasegawa, joined the 11th Division. Sometime shortly after joining Kenpachi was forced to learn kendō from Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto because he hadn't learned any formal swordsmanship training, having bypassed those normally necessary qualification due to the way he attained his position. Kenpachi hates using kendō because his battles would end too quickly with it, so he only uses it if his own life is in danger.

Kusajishi Yachiru

Picture
Yachiru Kusajishi (草鹿 やちる, Kusajishi Yachiru) is the Lieutenant of the 11th Division in the Gotei 13, under Captain Kenpachi Zaraki, as well as the President of the Shinigami Women's Association.

Yachiru first met Kenpachi in one of the worst districts of Rukongai, the 79th district of the North Alley, Kusajishi, as a nameless child. She crawled over to him after he had killed several other men with his unnamed Zanpakutō, and was completely unfazed by the violence she had just witnessed, or the blood on the sword. Even as Kenpachi warned her that the sword was dangerous, she reached out and touched it, giggling as her hand was covered in the blood of dead men. He adopted her after that, saving her from certain death in Rukongai. He named her "Yachiru" in memory of the only person he ever admired. Since that day she has spent much of her time clinging to his back for transport.

12th Division

Kurotsuchi Mayuri

Picture
Mayuri Kurotsuchi (涅 マユリ, Kurotsuchi Mayuri) is Captain of the 12th Division in the Gotei 13 and 2nd president of the Shinigami Research Institute. He gained his position after Kisuke Urahara, the former captain and president, was sentenced into exile by Soul Society. His lieutenant is Nemu Kurotsuchi, his artificially-created "daughter". He is often considered to be Uryū Ishida's nemesis due to their conflicting views on life and the fact that Mayuri vivisected and killed Uryū's grandfather, Sōken Ishida

Little is known about the early history of Mayuri, except that he was the only prisoner in the Maggot's Nest who was considered dangerous enough to necessitate confinement in a small prison cell, chained to the wall by his ankle. He would however one day be visited by Kisuke Urahara who was seeking his genius to become vice-president in the newly thought-of Research and Development Institute, something that would automatically get him out of there. At first Mayuri refused, until Kisuke began teasing him with the fact that he had nothing to tinker with down there and that as vice-president he would inherit everything should something happen to Urahara. Thus 9 years later, he became the third seat of the 12th Division. After an incident that got Urahara and Tessai Tsukabishi banished and several captains and seated officers Hollowfied, he later succeeded Urahara in leading the Research and Development Institute as well as somehow becoming captain of the 12th Division of the Gotei 13.

He also experimented on Quincy, including Sōken Ishida, Uryū's master and grandfather, in his studies. He believed that upon Sōken Ishida's death the Quincy had been entirely wiped out, and was disappointed to learn that Uryū was a Quincy because he considered his study of the Quincy complete and did not want any further Quincy specimens

Kurotsuchi Nemu

Picture
Nemu Kurotsuchi (涅 ネム, Kurotsuchi Nemu) is the lieutenant of the 12th Division of the Gotei 13 serving under Captain Mayuri Kurotsuchi.

Little else is known about Nemu outside of the fact she is the artificially created "daughter" of Mayuri Kurotsuchi. He seems to have used a combination of Gigai and Artificial soul technologies to bring her to existence. While she is partly resistant to poisons she is still affected by Mayuri's Zanpakutō, though it is non-fatal to her

13th Division

Ukitake Jushirou

Picture
Jūshirō Ukitake (浮竹 十四郎, Ukitake Jūshirō) is the captain of the 13th Division in the Gotei 13. The now-deceased Kaien Shiba once served as his lieutenant.

Jūshirō is the eldest son from the low-class aristocratic Ukitake family. He has five brothers and two sisters, whom he essentially supports by himself. He, along with Shunsui Kyōraku, was one of the first graduates of Captain Yamamoto's Shinou Academy. Furthermore, he was personally trained by Yamamoto. He and Kyōraku are the oldest captains amongst the Gotei 13, with the exception of Retsu Unohana and Yamamoto himself. It is stated that the four of them have been Captains of the Gotei 13 for at least 200 years as of 110 years ago before the current time.

During that time he tries to persuade a then-reluctant Kaien Shiba into becoming his lieutenant. The two converse about the current happenings in Soul Society, including a young Gin Ichimaru who happens to be a child prodigy surpassing the previous record set by Kaien himself. Kaien shrugs off any attempt Jūshirō makes at him being any type of prodigy. While visiting the Shiba residence, Jūshirō is shown to be quite popular with the servants, with Kaien noting that Jūshirō was still very charming and that he had a smile that made his servants blush. Jūshirō dismisses the compliment as he tries to remain humble about his notable quality.Later, Jūshirō is seen to be seemingly stunned by Kyōraku sending Lisa to investigate the disappearance of the 9th Division Captain and Lieutenant.

Jūshirō, due to his illness, rarely was able to fulfill his role as captain on a regular basis, instead having Kaien fill the role under his guidance.

When a then unknown Hollow killed a squad being lead by Kaien's wife, Miyako Shiba, Kaien became rightly enraged and wanted revenge. Despite this Jūshirō tried to reason with him that nothing was known of this new Hollow. Kaien would not relent so Jūshirō gave him the only information they did have, the lair of the creature. The night following Jūshirō, Kaien, and Rukia Kuchiki travel to the hollows lair, when they arrive Kaien asks for permission to fight the creature alone, which Jūshirō allows. Kaien fights the creature until it uses its unique technique and destroys his Zanpakutō. Kaien then continues to fight the creature with his bare hands. Eventually the battle starts to turn against Kaien to which Rukia tries to go and assist him. Jūshirō stopped Rukia from assisting, explaining that Kaien was fighting for his honor. The Hollow's abilities ultimately allow it to possess Kaien, and Jūshirō began to fight it, although his illness got in the way and allowed the Hollow to attack Rukia. But at that moment, to both Jūshirō and Rukia's horror, Kaien took control and impaled himself upon Rukia's sword, thanking the captain for understanding the value of his honor and that of his wife's.

The 13th Division has never been the same following Kaien's death, being without its well-loved lieutenant and Jūshirō having to rely on Kiyone Kotetsu and Sentarō Kotsubaki, which usually ends in a comical disaster.

Kotetsu Isane

Picture
Kiyone Kotetsu (虎徹 清音, Kotetsu Kiyone) is the co-3rd seated officer/acting lieutenant of the Thirteenth Division in the Gotei 13 under Captain Jūshirō Ukitake, sharing her position with Sentarō Kotsubaki.

Not much is known about Kiyone's history, except that she was already in the 13th Division when Rukia Kuchiki joined them. According to Lieutenant Kaien Shiba, sometimes both she and Sentarō would occasionally show up on duty while drunk. It is unknown what her rank was back while Kaien and Miyako were still alive, but she (along with Sentarō) became a 3rd seated officer sometime before the main storyline.

Kotsubaki Sentarou

Sentarō Kotsubaki (小椿 仙太郎, Kotsubaki Sentarō) is the co-3rd seat/acting lieutenant of the Thirteenth Division of the Gotei 13. He constantly argues with other co-third seat, Kiyone Kotetsu. Like Kiyone, he shows a great deal of admiration towards his assigned Captain, Jūshirō Ukitake.

Not much is known about Sentarō's history, except that he came from Rukongai. He was already a member of the 13th Division by the time Rukia Kuchiki joined. Both he and Kiyone would occasionally show up on duty drunk, as noted by Lieutenant Kaien Shiba (who was frequently annoyed when they did so). It is unknown what rank Sentarō had when both Kaien and Miyako were still alive, but he (and Kiyone) became a 3rd Seat officer sometime before the main storyline.
